What is the difference between a single coat and a two-coat system?

Last updated October 28, 2026

Short answer

A single coat is one application of one product. A two-coat system applies the technology twice, and it carries full coverage for the whole period rather than full-then-reducing cover, with a longer term and a higher value per square foot in the published table.

What the second coat changes

The product family is the same; the build is different. Fortify Elite is two coats of the Fortify technology. Revive with Fortify and Boost with Fortify pair a restoration or a hydrophobic coat with a UV shield on top of it.

In the table, every two-coat row is non-prorated: full coverage for the whole period. Every single application is either hybrid or fully prorated. That is the structural difference, and it matters more than the coat count on its own.

The numbers side by side

On a roof scored Good (90-100), Fortify alone is 15 years hybrid at $1.60 per square foot. Fortify Elite is 20 years non-prorated plus 5 years of hail at $2.30.

On Aging (44-74), Revive alone is 10 years hybrid at $1.40. Revive with Fortify is 12 years non-prorated at $2.00.

On Low (35-43), Boost alone is 5 years prorated at $1.10. Boost with Fortify is 10 years non-prorated at $1.50.

Why the term is not the whole story

A longer prorated term and a shorter non-prorated one are different promises. Prorated cover steps down as the years pass; non-prorated cover is worth the same in the last year as the first.

So when you compare a single coat with a two-coat build, compare the shape of the cover as well as the year count. The finder prints both on every card for exactly that reason.

When one coat is the right answer

A roof that is sound does not automatically need two coats. Fortify on a Good roof is 15 years of cover from a single application, and Revive puts flexibility back into a dried-out shingle without a second product on top.

The assessment recommends, and the estimate prices; nobody is asked to choose a build on the spot without seeing both rows in writing.

Same visit either way

Both builds are applied in one visit of about two hours, with no tear-off, so the choice is not a choice about disruption. The second coat is work on the same day rather than a return visit.

A note on coat counts in the table

The table states the coats for every row, so the build is never assumed: Boost, Revive and Fortify are one coat, and Fortify Elite, Revive with Fortify and Boost with Fortify are two. The coat column is the quickest way to check what a quote is actually for.

Estimate where your roof sits

Two answers give an estimated zone and the coverage that comes with it. The measured Roof Health Score at the assessment decides the rest.
